WEEK 11: Purchasing Components
In preparing the project components, several factors must be taken into account. Among them is the projects budget. Each project has its own budget and an estimated budget for the project was made during FYP1 proposal. Second, the list of components is an important part in the preparation of project components.
Before purchasing the components, survey has been done before purchasing the components.
Most of the components are purchased at Jalan Pasar, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless that, online survey also has been made and mostly the components are available at KedaiRobot.com.
The components are way much cheaper online than in store. Although that is the case, a big quantity of components only be able to be purchase from online. This project doesn't need that many components thus the option is to buy straight from the store.
The electronic components are mostly obtain from a store called Nixie at Jalan Pasar.
For the Stethoscope, it was obtained from Mudah.my since it is a medical device and can't be purchased from electronic store. It was quite a catch since the price is reasonable to complete this project.

WEEK 9: The Flowchart
Figure above shows the flowchart of the project
- This is the flow of the project, it started from picking up sound from the heart through the chest piece.
- Then the heart sound collected from the chest piece is transfer through the aux cable and the signal goes to the first part of amplifier circuit, which is pre-amplifier circuit.
- The pre-amplified signal is then filtered by the filter circuit part, afterwards the filtered and amplified signal go through the power amplifier.
- At this part by having the LM 386 op-amp it will amplify and make it audible to be heard through the speaker.
- Lastly, the output signal with Phonocardiograph display, heart sound wave, are display through the graphic LCD.
As conclusion, the flow of the project is plan as in the flowchart above. Nevertheless, the consequences, the project must be in this flow and in order to achieve the objectives.
WEEK 8: FYP Briefings
FYP Briefing 1 - 18th August 2017, Week 3
In the first Final Year Project 2 briefing , Dr Marwangi is the person who gives out the briefing to the students. The contents of the briefings are :
The conclusion from the briefing, we are aware that this course bring a heavy marks that could affect our CGPA, since it carries 6 credit hours. Thus, a very committed and dedicated effort must be put in to the course. Nevertheless of other subjects, this course subject concluded what we have learn throughout the years of degree.
FYP Briefing 2 - 6th September 2017, Week 6
For the 2nd briefing, Miss Pusparini Dewi, had given the briefing on that day. She focused on writing and content in the report. Specifically, in Chapter 1,2 and 3.
In chapter 1 she emphasized more on writing the introduction with a simple word in order to make the reader or supervisor understands easily without turning the pages many times.
For chapter 2, Literature Review. As usual this part might gives a lot of score since we are comparing our projects towards the existing project writings. Thus, a lot of reading needed to be done in completing this chapter.
Chapter 3, methodology part which included the block diagram, flow chart and hardware and software development. Here is the part where reader/supervisor acknowledge the methods that we used.
In conclusion, completing this part is crucial and needed much more focus and a lot of reading.
In the first Final Year Project 2 briefing , Dr Marwangi is the person who gives out the briefing to the students. The contents of the briefings are :
- Explanation on the distribution marks in FYP 2, where the weightage are, 40% for Presentation of project, 20% for Logbook/Blog, an another 40% for Project Writing Report.
- She also reminded us about the plagiarism of report must be not more than 20%.
- For more details and updates about FYP 2 refer to FYP Unikl BMI Website at www.fyp.bmi.unikl.edu.my or FYP Handbook.

WEEK 7: Complete Circuit Diagram
Referring to the above circuit diagram, it shows a complete circuit in implementing an electronic stethoscope.
The circuit shows from the connection of the chest piece to the pre-amplifier circuit using the TL072 op-amp, then towards the filtering part, then the main part of the circuit is the power amplifier circuit then lastly towards the output which is the stereo jack to the speaker/graphic LCD.
By having Audioguru as the reference to this project, the project is most possibly can be done successfully. Through out the process, including assembling the circuit, to soldering part, then to the testing part.
Some complications occurred, might be because of the unstable of the components, or the soldering part is way too much disturbance. Nevertheless, the project are still ongoing process to achieve the objectives.
Since the added value towards this project is the LCD graphic that is needed to be assemble as the output of the project, in order to display the phonocardiogram display, some coding needed to be done in this project. Arduino, the microcontroller, is then used to operate this LCD with the coding coded.
WEEK 6: Hardware Development - 1
As the proposed title of the project is
Development of Electronic Stethoscope with Phonocardiogram Display,
some modifications has been made towards the stethoscope that is seen today in the market.
In adaptation to the project, a condensed microphone is slit through to a see through plastic tube in order to give a clear vision of how the microphone collects the signal from the chest piece of the stethoscope. Thus, the chest piece was removed from the ear piece , and only have the chest piece tube to be connected towards the condensed microphone.
Figure below shows the development that has been made to adapt to the project objectives.
This figure below shows when the chest piece and the condensed microphone is put together. In order to achieve the objective no. 1, which are to develop electronic stethoscope by using condensed microphone through a chest piece.
WEEK 5: Power amplifier circuit
Since the sound from the heart showing small signal thus in amplifying the signal of the heart sound, power amplifier circuit is needed.
The op-amp chosen to be the amplifier is LM-386 since it amplify low noise, and the amplifier cater for low noise voltage amplifier. So, it is suitable for this project and it will make the sound audible.
Since the gain are from 20-200, then it is effective enough for the amplifier to amplify the heart sound since the heart sound frequency is in that range.
The figure below shows the 8 pin-out including labels of the op-amp.
The inputs are ground referenced while the output
automatically biases to one-half the supply voltage.
The quiescent power drain is only 24 mW when
operating from a 6-V supply, making the LM-386 is ideal for battery operation.
Moreover it make it more suitable for this project since, this product is going to get the power supply by 9V battery.
Amplifiers can be thought of as a simple box or block containing the amplifying device, such as a Transistor, Field Effect Transistor or Op-amp, which has two input terminals and two output terminals (ground being common) with the output signal being much greater than that of the input signal as it has been “Amplified”.
Table below shows the classification of amplifiers.
Type of Signal | Type of Configuration | Frequency of Operation
Small Signal | Common Emitter | Class A Amplifier | Direct Current (DC) |
Large Signal | Common Base | Class B Amplifier | Audio Frequencies (AF) |
Common Collector | Class AB Amplifier | Radio Frequencies (RF)
Class C Amplifier | VHF, UHF and SHF Frequencies |
